An acetabular fracture is a break in the "ball-and-socket" hip joint's socket. Hip socket fractures are uncommon, occurring far less commonly than fractures of the upper femur or femoral head (the "ball" portion of the joint). The vast majority of acetabular fractures are caused by a high-energy event, such as a vehicle accident. Patients frequently have further injuries that necessitate rapid treatment. A low-energy occurrence, such as a fall from standing, may produce an acetabular fracture in an older person with weaker bones in a reduced proportion of cases. Articular cartilage covers the bone surfaces of the ball and socket, providing protection and cushioning while allowing the bones to move freely. Ligaments are bands of tissue that join one bone to another. These ligaments assist the hip joint function and remain stable, allowing it to move without sliding out of the socket.
