An anterior cruciate ligament can be rebuilt using a variety of techniques (ACL). The most popular technique for replacing the ACL involves using a tendon from another part of your body. Either a spinal anesthetic, which involves injecting anesthetic into your spine to make you conscious but unable to feel pain, or a general anesthetic, which leaves you completely unconscious during the treatment, will be administered to you. Together with discussing the procedure with you, your anesthetist can advise on the best kind of anesthetic to employ. The surgeon will carefully check the interior of your knee after giving you a general anesthesia, commonly using a device called an arthroscope. Your knee surgeon will examine other areas of your knee for injury in addition to confirming that your ACL is damaged. Any additional damage discovered may be fixed either during or following your ACL surgery. Your surgeon will remove the graft tissue so it can be relocated if it has been confirmed that your ACL is torn.
