A traumatic injury, such as a fall or a car accident, can result in the breaking of your leg or other bones in your body. A complex fracture occurs when a shattered bone pierces your skin. You'll need surgery to realign your bones, followed by immobilization with a cast. If you believe you have a broken bone, always go to the emergency room. A complex fracture is a visible break or crack in your bone through your skin. In most cases, bones shatter as a result of force and/or trauma, such as a vehicle accident. Fractures can also occur as a result of less painful but recurrent impact. For example, if a soldier repeatedly marches with a heavy pack on their back, the repeated impact on their leg could result in a sprained ankle. When a shattered bone pierces your skin, this is referred to as a "compound" or "open" fracture. If you fall from a ladder and land on your arm, you'll know you have a complex fracture if you can see the bone. "Simple" or "closed" fractures do not penetrate the skin. Compound fractures cause excruciating discomfort. It can be terrifying to have your bone exposed. A fracture is a serious injury, and you should get medical attention right away.
